The Genius's Dream, a Flying Helical Wing
The prototype of the 'flying machine' conceived by the genius Leonardo da Vinci over 500 years ago. Based on his surviving sketches, you can recreate the helicopter with its helical wing. Embark on an assembly journey that satisfies your intellectual curiosity by reliving a historic invention.
The paper used for this project is KOKUYO heavyweight paper (A4 size), 0.17mm thick.
Lightweight inkjet Japanese paper (or the heavyweight paper above).
Japanese paper was used to create the linen-like texture of the helical wing.
Fast-drying wood glue is easy to handle for adhesion.
Create an octagonal prism with parts no.001, no.002, and no.003.
Insert and glue the legs into no.005.
Create a ring with no.007.
Glue the parts marked with a red circle to the inside of the ring.
Part no.004
Combine with the assembly from STEP 2.
Glue no.006 around the perimeter.
Create one large ring with no.013.
Part no.014
Align the triangle marks and glue no.015 to the assembly from STEP 6.
Combine the assemblies from STEP 8 and STEP 9.
Parts no.011 and no.012
Insert a rod from the back of no.011 and glue it.
Glue it to form an octagonal prism.
Part no.022
Align no.021 with the red circle and glue.
Parts no.016, no.017, and no.019
Glue no.017.
Create another disk on the opposite side using no.018 and no.019.
Combine with the assembly from STEP 12.
Combine with the assembly from STEP 10.
Insert no.020 into the hole of the disk.
Parts no.008, no.009, and no.010
Align the long edge of no.024 with the short edge of no.025, and glue them from the back with no.023.
no.024 is the top part, no.025 is the bottom.
Glue the triangular prism made in STEP 20 to the back of the helical wing.
Place the helical wing on top to complete.
